23- Jesus as a Jewish Healer
Thanks for tuning in. This podcast seeks to increase the knowledge base about the world of the Bible among Christians, Jews, Latter-day Saints (aka Mormons), and others. In this episode, we look at Jesus as a Jewish healer. We situate Jesus within early Jewish contexts and notions of miracle workers and healers Stories of healing in Second Temple literature are few.
Most of them are accounts of healings performed by biblical prophets like Elijah and Elisha. healers in Jesus’ day—or those thought to be healers—were rare, at least according to the available evidence. Jewish literature does mention, however, a handful of healers that might help us contextualize Jesus’ healing activities. Before meeting these figures, it behooves us to step back and explore briefly the ancient Mediterranean conceptions of illness.
