It’s a fun filled day of fun for the entire family starting at 7 a.m. at the 4K Independence Day Run, followed by the Patriotic Program at Archer Park. The Main Street Parade presented by H-E-B will start at 9 a.m. from Houston Avenue to Beech Street on Main Street. Don’t forget about the Freedom Festival at Archer Park. Later in the day go to McAllen Municipal Pool for Aquatica Extravaganza followed by the celebration at McAllen Municipal Park for Concert in the Sky with festivities, food trucks, and live music. Finally, the 4th of July Concert in the Sky at 9 p.m. at McAllen Municipal Park. Happy 4th of July.

The International Museum of Art & Science (IMAS,) a Smithsonian Affiliate, has a new exhibit called “Water/Ways” which examines water as an environmental necessity and an important cultural element. “Water/Ways” is a traveling exhibition from the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service. “Water/Ways” will be at IMAS until August 11, 2024.

Champion Lakes Golf Course in McAllen, Texas, is proud to be the host golf course for the Drive, Chip & Putt Local Qualifier on Friday, May 3, 2024, starting at 3:00 p.m. Hosted in partnership with the Southern Texas Professional Golf Association (STPGA) and the McAllen Parks & Recreation Department, the event is open to junior golfers ages 7 to 15 years old. Participants will have three shots at each station and qualifying golfers will advance to the Regional portion and a chance at the National Competition at Augusta National Golf Club, where they will compete against junior golfers from across America.

The McAllen Public Library is looking for qualified candidates to volunteer at the McAllen Public Library Book Store.  If you’re interested in applying for a volunteer position, please visit www.mcallen.net or pick up an application at the McAllen Public Library. The volunteer hours are flexible and convenient for volunteers.  The position will assist customers purchase books, stock books and accept book donations at the McAllen Public Library.

The City of McAllen will be launching outreach efforts to develop Vision Zero Action Plan. The Vision Zero Action Plan is a traffic safety plan that will be created through data unique to the community in order to create safer transportation systems with a goal of reducing injuries and fatalities on McAllen roadways to zero. The outreach will include a multi-faceted approach, integrating education, engineering, evaluation, enforcement, and policy.

Keep McAllen Beautiful is looking for volunteers. KMB is organizing its annual Great American Clean-Up and Don’t Mess with Texas Trash-Off on Saturday, April 13, 2024 at 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at McAllen Municipal Park. The group of volunteers will meet in the park at 8 a.m. and be given their assignments to their locations. They are looking for volunteers, groups or businesses who would like to participate.
