Jack Tatum and The Game | Buckeye Focused
As we all know, life is deeper than just football. It goes without saying. That doesn’t mean sports aren’t important — if anything that’s why they are important. Sports bring people together, sports create stories, sports teach you about winning and losing, sports get you in shape, sports get you interested, and sports matter because they don’t matter. This podcast started because of a buckeye here and a buckeye there. Football got us here, but this podcast and football run deeper. But it’s still almost Michigan week. And we need us a Jack Tatum and The Game story — and we have one, told by Nate Oliver.Topics in this episode:Ohio State vs. Indiana game | Miyan Williams | Kamryn BabbThe GameCJ. Tribalism in Sports x Player Mindset | Buckeye Focused 8
Fan psychology and player mindset play an enormous role in sports — especially when we add tribalism to the equation. Tribalism in sports is nothing new. We have to talk about it…In this episode of Buckeye Focused we discuss fan psychology, tribalism in sports, and player mindset – we even get into those Buckeye losses (Virginia Tech, Oklahoma, Michigan State, Iowa, Purdue, Alabama). Tattoogate + Transfer Portal, Coach Tressel ft. Solomon Thomas | Buckeye Focused 6
Tattoogate at Ohio State was a mission to take down the Buckeye football program. And in the aftermath of 2011, it seemed possible. But as it turns out, the Buckeye program is widely considered to be one of the top college football programs in the entire country–and former players, including those in this episode, are a big part of that.Tattoogate featured the Tattoo 5. It sounds like a band, but it’s filled with misinformation, media clickbait, and basically an attack on college football players and their head coach, Jim Tressel. We aren’t here to decipher all that went down (yet), but we are here to talk to one of the members of The Tattoo 5, Solomon Thomas — and hear stories on Tattoogate and more.In this episode with Solomon Thomas, we discuss way more than the Tattoogate scandal. We talk homecoming, redshirting, Jim Tressel, NIL, transfer portal, the 2007 College Football National Championship in New Orleans vs LSU, and the 2011 Sugar Bowl vs Arkansas where Solomon Thomas had the game-clinching interception. And of course, we talk about Tattoogate. At the end of the conversation, we discuss Ohio State at Michigan State and re-cap the “fake punt” vs Rutgers, running the ball, heated coaches, blowout games, and protecting players.More about Solomon Thomas: sports reference | game-clinching interception article on Cleveland.com | Sugar Bowl images (check out the 3rd image from the top!)Enjoy today’s show featuring former Ohio State Buckeye, Nate Oliver (IG), Eric Kasimov (Twitter), and Solomon Thomas (LinkedIn).Nate played for the Buckeyes mostly under Coach Jim Tressel between 2007-2011. Special Teams War Daddy & DBs Going Low | Buckeye Focused 5
What’s the future of special teams in football? As Nate Oliver explains, if you take away special teams, you will take away jobs. We get into the importance of special teams and what it takes to be a special teams player — or as Nate calls it, a War Daddy. What is a special teams war daddy?!After a weekend of games that saw many leg injuries (it seems like that’s every week now), we talk about defensive backs going low. Football is trying to eliminate head injuries and for good reason, but this is leading to a significant number of lower body injuries. We have to talk about it.Topics for Buckeye Focused 5 | Special Teams War Daddy & DBs Going LowGreg SchianoJeff HafleyUrban MeyerMike LocksleyMichigan @ Ohio State super early previewLeg injuries in football are significantThe future of special teams in footballKevin EverettShaun Lane | more than sportsRutgers vs Ohio StateCollege Football needs more marquee gamesOhio State | running the ballI don’t give a damn for the whole state of MichiganEnjoy today’s show featuring former Ohio State Buckeye, Nate Oliver (IG) and Eric Kasimov (Twitter).Nate played for the Buckeyes mostly under Coach Jim Tressel between 2007-2011. Jimmie Bell: “I Got the Courage to Start Over” | Buckeye Focused 4
This is the kind of conversation that has a lasting impact. Jimmie Bell (JB) has had this effect on people for years, but before he started affecting others, he had to get real himself. As a defensive lineman at Ohio State, Jimmie Bell was on the wrong track. As he said, “I was useless to the program.” And then he had a moment and now a story he shared in this episode that led to this:“I got the courage to start over from the beginning to be who I was.”Jimmie Bell deserves to be heard–more importantly, he needs to be heard. And we hope you will listen to what JB has to say. We promise you will be impacted by this conversation no matter your background. While this is “Buckeye Focused”, a buckeye here and a buckeye there spawned this conversation. But this conversation goes way beyond football and buckeyes. I’ve always said “sports bring people together” and this conversation screams that.More about Jimmie Bell:Football: Ohio State Defensive Lineman, 1997 Rose Bowl Champion, 1999 New York Giants, 2000 San Diego ChargersTEDx Talk: Invincible Currency; Better Than a Trophy | TEDxHilliardBelpre High School Football CoachBuckeye informationConnect with JB: Facebook | TwitterIt wouldn’t be a Buckeye Focused podcast if we didn’t talk about the big game. Iowa Football Racial Bias Scandal | Toledo Rockets, Diauntae Morrow, Speaks Truths on Time at Iowa + Bucks vs Rockets in The Shoe | Buckeye Focused 3
Nate Oliver brings on former Iowa Hawkeye and Toledo Rockets safety, Diauntae Morrow, to talk Buckeyes vs Rockets. But the simple fact of these two teams facing off in The Shoe only brought us together to have this dialogue. As our rallying cry goes, “sports bring people together”.  And this conversation is more than just football. We discuss the Iowa football racial bias scandal.Football is what created the opportunity for this conversation. Diauntae and Nate are former high school football teammates at St. Edward High School in Cleveland, Ohio — and they remain great friends to this day.Diauntae Morrow played for Coach Kirk Ferentz in 2007 and 2008 before transferring to Toledo to finish his college football career. What led to his leaving of the Hawkeye program is where this conversation must be heard. As you may know, the former Iowa strength and conditioning coach reached a separation agreement with the University of Iowa on June 15, 2020, due to allegations of racism and mistreatment from former players. He was later hired in a controversial move by the Jacksonville Jaguars only to resign soon after. On June 8, 2020, ESPN published this article: Ex-Iowa DB Diauntae Morrow details alleged 2009 altercation with strength coach Chris DoyleThis podcast episode featuring Diauntae gets into many of the details surrounding this racial bias situation and Iowa football. This episode gets into incredible high school moments, recruiting stories that can’t be missed, best places to play college football, Toledo football, and of course, all of this with a Buckeye focus. We have to talk about it — all of it!Enjoy today’s show featuring former Ohio State Buckeye, Nate Oliver (IG).
