Walking Alongside: Perspectives

Charissa McKay

Welcome to Walking Alongside: Perspectives. Take a walk with me as we explore perspectives that I find interesting, moving, ridiculous, hilarious, infuriating, frustrating or down right bizarre! This iteration of the podcast features a combination of short (read 10-15 minutes'ish or less) solo-pods sharing what I have seen, heard, experienced or am navigating and fun and insightful conversations with cool people. Hopefully it will be relatable, possibly humourous, thought provoking or at the very least, entertaining. Looking forward to sharing these perspectives and hope you enjoy.

David Bowie - The Man, the Music, the Movies
Send us a textIn this episode - I have a special guest/cohost! None other than my kiddo Daphne. Audiophile in the making, they are joining me in a three part series where we look at music and what it means to us, what we think about it, and what we actually like about it. In this first installment, we talk all things David Bowie - well maybe not ALL things. But we do consider a number of his albums, some classic and slightly more obscure songs, and ponder his movies - for better or for worse. It's a super fun conversation, and if you like David a little or a lot, I'm sure you might be surprised what a 15 yr old has in terms of insight and interesting takes on this musical icon. A little Gen X meets Gen Z. Shout out to my friend Todd for scoring me the music, and if you want to listen to a real music podcast, then I suggest you check out "Tapeheads: 80s Music and Beyond" that he does with a friend. Really great, highly recommend. https://www.tapeheadspod.com/ Listen wherever you get your podcasts - you can find Walking Alongside on Podcast Addict, Podchaser, Pocket Casts, Deezer, Player FM, Tune-In and of course Spotify, Google Player and Apple Podcasts - where if you can leave a comment or throw me some ideas of topics you'd like to hear about, that would be great. The Perspective Changing Power of Travel

The Perspective Changing Power of Travel
Send us a textWhen you travel - there are so many things that could happen. Being on a cruise ship, which is really more like being on location than truly travelling, or going to a resort, which while ticking the boxes of "getting away from it, having some downtime and relaxing" doesn't really allow for a true experience of wherever you are. Truly travelling provides so many opportunities to live like the locals. To be able to see things on the beaten path and off. To let go of ideas that might have their origins in what others have said, shows you've seen or things you've read. You get to create your own ideas and reality of a place when you go there, see and experience things. Travel can change your perspectives, and in many ways travel can change your life. Giving you the clarity to see things in a new way, that a change of scenery is sometimes the catalyst of or for. So if you get the opportunity. Take it. Do it. As often as you can. A world of amazing adventures is out there waiting for you. Music for this episode is by Clear Sky by Hartzman courtesy Uppbeat.https://uppbeat.io/t/hartzmann/clear-skyLicense code: ZXLJLJ32BP5V3XNP) Listen wherever you get your podcasts - you can find Walking Alongside on Podcast Addict, Podchaser, Pocket Casts, Deezer, Player FM, Tune-In and of course Spotify, Google Player and Apple Podcasts - where if you can leave a comment or throw me some ideas of topics you'd like to hear about, that would be great. Mind Over Matter

Mind Over Matter
Send us a textThe last little while there seem to have been all these little hints or clues that I needed to be a little more connected - in my mind and body, more mindful, more present, more able to respond rather than react. And let's be clear, it's still a work in progress, but this most recent experience really cemented for me that there is great benefit in trying to be a little more aware, a little more mindful day to day, because you just never know when you're going to have call upon that ability to be still and in the present. If you are not someone who likes to or is "good at" mindfulness, don't quit trying. There are so many great books out there that can help you find a way and a place to start that is not overwhelming and really approachable. Like finding the right mattress or that perfect pair of boots, sometimes you just need to try a bunch out before you find the one that really fits you. Here is a link to some books that might "fit the bill":https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/14096 (I have no affiliation to Goodreads, buy the books wherever you like to get your books!!!!) (Not All) People are Stupid

(Not All) People are Stupid
Send us a textAt first blush, it might sound like this is going to be just a negative bashing of, well, pretty much anything you can think of - but it's not. Yes it's about stupid people, or perhaps more precisely the stupid things they do, but it's not an exhaustive listing of the stupid things that people do, because a) that would be fodder for a whole podcast, let alone just an episode and b) there is a bright side. Joining me on this exhilarating romp down "stupid is as stupid does" lane, is Curtis Christopher, Argyll resident, dad, business guy, social committee member and all round great person. We discuss a few very specific examples of stupidity and then consider what might be the road to redemption. It's a funny, authentic look at something that there is too much of in this world, but, that if we all put our minds and hearts to it, might be in all our power to remedy - to some extent.Once again - there is no explicit material, but that odd "curse" word is uttered, so best to keep younger, impressionable ears covered or otherwise occupied:)  Listen wherever you get your podcasts - you can find Walking Alongside on Podcast Addict, Podchaser, Pocket Casts, Deezer, Player FM, Tune-In and of course Spotify, Google Player and Apple Podcasts - where if you can leave a comment or throw me some ideas of topics you'd like to hear about, that would be great. The Antithesis of Fast Fashion
Send us a textWho among us hasn't caved and bought that cute T-shirt while on vacation, or dashed into the store because something caught our eye in the window display? We can probably all remember the "back to school shopping" trip that we did as kids, and may do now with our own kids, but have you ever thought about what happens to those clothes after the shine has worn off, or knees get worn out? Well, you are about to find out the good, the bad and the ugly in the thrifting and textile recycling world from Sarah Janzen of Blenderz Garment Recyclers. Join us for a fascinating conversation about what we can do to help her and her team revolutionize what happens to our textiles when we all start to look at things a little differently. Check it out here: https://www.blenderzgarmentrecyclers.com/Come visit Blenderz here: 5609 Gateway Boulevard, Edmonton, ABContact them here: hello@blenderzgarmentrecyclers.comFollow them on social here:@blenderzgarmentrecyclers on IG Listen wherever you get your podcasts - you can find Walking Alongside on Podcast Addict, Podchaser, Pocket Casts, Deezer, Player FM, Tune-In and of course Spotify, Google Player and Apple Podcasts - where if you can leave a comment or throw me some ideas of topics you'd like to hear about, that would be great. Things I Don't Understand

Things I Don't Understand
Send us a textHave you ever thought about the things that you don't understand. I find myself saying that a LOT. I'm not sure why...maybe because I'm always thinking about something, usually a problem or a challenge that I'm hopeful there is a solution to, especially as it pertains to work, but invariably, part of the problem ends up being something I don't understand. Often, why something is the way it is, when it could be so much better with so little effort if only someone would make one small change or do something differently. So this episode is all about just some of the things I don't understand, and believe me the list is long. Some are small, trivial things, others of them fairly significant and requiring of solutions that someone who is way smarter or more competent than I am is going to have to be responsible for. If you have things that you don't understand, it would be fun to hear about them!  Listen wherever you get your podcasts - you can find Walking Alongside on Podcast Addict, Podchaser, Pocket Casts, Deezer, Player FM, Tune-In and of course Spotify, Google Player and Apple Podcasts - where if you can leave a comment or throw me some ideas of topics you'd like to hear about, that would be great.
