Dallas Willard taught that we should take Jesus seriously as someone who's life and words we should honestly seek to live out with sincerity and commitment. But being like Jesus feels like a target way out there that's unachievable. However, God isn't looking for people who are perfect but are simply committed to the chase. The apostle Paul wrote about this in Romans 8:38-39 and 2 Corinthians 4:7-18, among other places. He talked about his determination to not allow anything to separate him from God's love and that the troubles we go through are not worth comparing to the glory that will be revealed in us.
