Oilers fans everywhere in Arizona, Bruins preview, and a #NationVacation recap
We're back from the Arizona #NationVacation, the Oilers had a home game in another country, and that meant there was a whole lot to talk about on this week's episode of Better Lait Than Never.Kicking off this week’s podcast, I had to get started with a recap from this weekend’s #NationVacation to Arizona, and how it was one of the greatest weekends of my life. From the amazing people who joined us to the incredible atmosphere at Mullett Arena, this trip was one for the ages, and I’m so grateful to have been able to experience it.Turning the podcast back to the Oilers, I started with a look back at the two-game win streak that started with one in Dallas before being extended in Arizona and how the boys will need an effort more like the one they gave against the Stars if the plan is to beat the Bruins. With RNH on the shelf with illness and the PK continuing to struggle, the Oilers desperately need to tighten the details of their game if they plan to win some of these very important home games before the end of the month.Lastly, I wrapped up this week's Better Lait Than Never with a Righteous Sack Beating about airport food costs after spending a bunch of time in transit this past week. You gotta love getting gauged when they know exactly how excited one is to go on a holiday. I also dove into the latest batch of voicemails that ranged from Oilers thoughts, to TV, to helping me recap the #NationVacation. Connor McDavid's six-point night, Oilers rumours, and some love for Cody Ceci

Connor McDavid's six-point night, Oilers rumours, and some love for Cody Ceci
What better way to celebrate Valentine's Day than by listening to a brand new episode of Better Lait Than Never with that special someone? This week, we're discussing the three games we've missed since the last podcast, going to see City and Colour at Rogers Place, trade deadline rumours, and a whole lot more.Kicking off this week's episode of BLTN, I got started with a recap of City and Colour from Saturday night at Rogers Place. At first, I was nervous about skipping the Oilers game in favour of a concert, but the tone quickly changed as I was checking the score from my seat. It's amazing how much my mood can be affected by the score in an Oilers game, but the good news is that Dallas Green did everything he could to make me forget about it.Turning the podcast back to the Oilers, I needed to talk about Connor McDavid's ridiculous night that he had against the Detroit Red Wings. Of course, watching the captain do things that don't make sense is pretty common around here, but even he had never put up the kind of night he had last night at Rogers Place. Every time we think he's reached his limit in terms of blowing our minds, he pulls another trick out of his hat that has the hockey world collectively rebooting their hard drives.Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another Righteous Sack Beating and a fresh round of voicemails to get your take on everything that's been happening since last week's episode. As always, the BLTN listeners brought the heat and hearing all of your thoughts was easily my favourite part of this week's show. The Oilers win streak is over, Silly Szn rumours, and Drake's big reveal
It's been a busy couple of days even though it's only been a couple of days since the voicemail edition of my podcast, and that meant there was plenty to get caught up on.Kicking off the new episode of Better Lait Than Never, I got started with a trending topic from Twitter that was making the rounds yesterday. Of course, I could only be talking about Drake. Maybe you might be reading this and thinking the Canadian rapper had new music come out, but you could not be further from the truth, even though he did have some fresh content hit the Internet.Turning the podcast back toward the Oilers, I touched on last night's loss to the Vegas Golden Knights and how it was a painful one despite the team playing well. Even though we all knew the Oilers weren't going to win out the rest of their schedule, having the streak ended by the Golden Knights was certainly a tough pill to swallow, especially when you consider that the boys played well. Way she goes, I suppose. The good news is that the Oilers are now on deck to start a new winning streak, and it all starts on Friday night against the Anaheim Ducks. Will one extended streak lead into another? Dare to dream, friends. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another Righteous Sack Beating and a fresh round of voicemails to get your take on everything that's been happening since last week's episode. The Oilers may never lose again, and my mixed feelings on Corey Perry

The Oilers may never lose again, and my mixed feelings on Corey Perry
It's been a busy couple of weeks since my last podcast. I was in Toronto last week for a business trip, the Oilers signed Corey Perry, and they also wrapped up their 14th consecutive win, meaning there was a lot to talk about on the brand new episode of Better Lait Than Never.Kicking off the podcast, I got started with a quick recap of my trip to Toronto and how it was a great experience to be able to get into the weeds of how our business works and how we can continue to improve. As I was sitting in those sessions, it was almost surreal to me to think about how far this company has come in the 10 years I've worked here full time. After getting home from the Six, I basically jumped right into a car and drove to Jasper for the annual pond hockey tournament, which happens to be one of the greatest weekends of the year.Turning the show toward the Oilers, I had to start with the news that the team had signed Corey Perry to a one-year contract to finish up the year in Edmonton and what that means for the team moving forward. Given that the Oilers are riding a 14-game heater, it's fair to wonder if the team needed this kind of addition right now, but I'm personally very excited. Now that Perry is here, however, I do wonder who is going to come out of the lineup to clear up the spot. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another Righteous Sack Beating and a fresh round of voicemails to get your take on everything that's been happening since last week's episode. Oilers still undefeated in 2024, ugly wins, and the mighty Zach Hyman

Oilers still undefeated in 2024, ugly wins, and the mighty Zach Hyman
It must be your favourite day of the week because I've got a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never recorded and set to massage your eardrums.Kicking things off, I started the new episode of BLTN with yet another complaint about winter. While I was thriving under the brown winter, getting hit by a dump of snow and cold over the last few days really ruined my mojo. On the bright side, I did get a new bed amid the deep freeze conditions, and it's given me a great excuse to do nothing other than sleep all day. Back to business, I started the Oilers talk with a quick recap of last night's game in Chicago and how that might have been one of the ugliest wins you'll ever see. While the 2-1 final ended up in our favour, the boys certainly didn't do themselves many favours on the way there despite going up against a team that is missing most of its best players. Yet, at the same time, isn't winning hockey games the most important part of the story regardless of how you get there? Winners of 16 of their last 19 games, the Oilers are finding ways to get the job done even when they don't offer their best effort, and that's a really nice trait to have given the climb they face to get back in the playoffs. The good news is that the Oilers' best players are playing like their best players, and it's no surprise that the success we're seeing right now is directly tied to those individuals raising their level of play. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another Righteous Sack Beating and a fresh round of voicemails to get your take on everything that's been happening since last week's episode. Oilers are undefeated in 2024, and Connor McDavid hits 900 points
At some point, having a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never come out will be the highlight of your week. Until then, however, I'll just keep plugging away with fresh releases every single Wednesday, including this brand new episode that covers the Christmas break and what's to come in 2024.Kicking off this week's podcast, I recapped what was left of the Christmas break since the last episode, including a look at the Oilers' six-game win streak after they beat the Flyers 5-2 last night at Rogers Place. As much as I was trying to relax during the break, it was hard to do when all I was thinking about was whether or not the Oilers will have enough time to climb out of their early season hole. As much as the team is rolling right now — you love to see a six-game win streak powering them forever — they're still not catching the teams in front of them as much as you would think based on the results. On the bright side, Connor McDavid continued his surge up the NHL points leaderboard after another five-point performance saw him hit and rush past the 900-point plateau. After a slow start by his own standards, the Oilers' captain is back to putting up points en masse, and it's going to be so much fun to see whether he's got another gear to hit down the stretch. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another Righteous Sack Beating and a fresh round of voicemails to get your take on everything that's been happening since last week's episode. The Oilers are losing again, and Connor Brown to be a healthy scratch

The Oilers are losing again, and Connor Brown to be a healthy scratch
The Oilers find themselves in the midst of another losing streak that's growing in length, which meant there was a lot to talk about on this week's podcast. Ladies and gentlemen, it's time for a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never.Kicking off the podcast, I got started with a look at Christmas. Seeing as the big day is coming up on Monday, I wanted to go over some of the strangest Christmas traditions that I could find on the Internet. If you're looking for new ideas to spice up your holiday season, then this segment could be for you. Turning the podcast back to the Oilers, I got started with the current three-game losing streak and how this team is back to looking like the one that lost all of those games earlier in the season. While the loss to Tampa Bay was frustrating but ultimately liveable, the same cannot be said about the last two against Florida and the New York Islanders. One of the most interesting items to come out of last night's loss to New York is that Kris Knoblauch is, once again, shifting up his line combos a little bit. The most notable change, however, has to be Connor Brown being healthy scratched in favour of Adam Erne. If you had told me that would be happening when Brown signed his deal back in July, I never would have believed you in a million years. Is the move fair? It's certainly easy to defend given Brown's struggles. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another Righteous Sack Beating and a fresh round of voicemails to get your take on everything that's been happening since last week's episode. The Oilers keep winning and my trouser budget keeps growing

The Oilers keep winning and my trouser budget keeps growing
It's been a thousand years since the Oilers last played, and that meant I was very excited to talk about some actual hockey as opposed to whatever drivel is normally coursing through my brain. Ladies and gentlemen, it's time for a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never.Kicking off this week's podcast, I got started with a look at Christmas shopping, one of my most detested activities of all time. It's not that I don't like buying presents for my friends and family, but rather I get annoyed by the ridiculous crowds of people who swarm most stories in the Western world. Thank Gord for Amazon. On the bright side, one of the fun parts about Christmas is that it gives us all an excuse to drink weekday rums in the spirit of the holidays. If drinking on a Tuesday night isn't festive, then I don't know what is. Turning the podcast toward the Oilers, how can you not feel excited (cautiously optimistic?) about this eight-game heater the team is on right now? After the team wrapped up its eighth consecutive win with a 4-1 finish over the Blackhawks last night, the Oilers find themselves only a single point out of a playoff spot with games in hand. I don't know about you, but I didn't really expect them to get back xin the race as quickly as they have. I figured it would take until later in the season for the Oilers to get back in the playoff mix, but I suppose there's not much that an extended winning streak can't solve. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another Righteous Sack Beating and a fresh round of voicemails to get your take on everything that's been happening since last week's episode. There's an Oilers game and Philip Broberg rumours to talk about!

There's an Oilers game and Philip Broberg rumours to talk about!
It's been a thousand years since the Oilers last played, and that meant I was very excited to talk about some actual hockey as opposed to whatever drivel is normally coursing through my brain.Kicking off this week's podcast, I got started with a look at the weather. Why? Because it's December 6th in Edmonton, and there is barely any snow. I know some folks are missing the snow at this time of the year, but for me, I'm pumped about it. I will take a dry/brown Christmas for the first time in forever, and I don't care who knows it or why you're wrong about missing the snow. Turning the podcast back to the Oilers, I started with the Philip Broberg rumours after news broke that the player was granted permission to seek greener pastures. Does the trade request make sense? We'll dig in. From there, I looked at all of the other stories that have happened over the last week or so not only with the Oilers but around the NHL at large. Despite the lack of games, this past week has had all kinds of news and rumors to chew on whether it made sense or not. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another Righteous Sack Beating and a fresh round of voicemails to get your take on everything that's been happening since last week's episode. Connor McDavid is back and everyone else should be worried about it
It's so much more exciting to be recording Better Lait Than Never after a run of wins as opposed to the Oilers getting shelled all the time. Needless to say, today's episode of the podcast was a little bit more uplifting than they have been over the last few weeks.Kicking off this week's episode of BLTN, I jumped in with some Oilers news after the team beat the Vegas Golden Knights for their third consecutive win. That's not to say it was the prettiest win you'll ever see — Gord knows the Oilers tried to make it as tough as possible — but the good news is that they still found a way to get the job done even when the going got tough. A big part of that win was the performance by Connor McDavid, who put up another three-point period as he continues to vault his way up the NHL scoring leaderboard. Another guy who found a way to chip in last night was Sam Gagner. Gagner has already put three goals on the board despite playing in only nine games, which is fantastic production from the bottom six at a time when we desperately need some goals. And since we were talking about needing some goals, there are no two players on the Oilers' roster that need one more than Ryan McLeod, Connor Brown, and Warren Foegele. Those three guys are getting things done in terms of possession metrics and pushing the play, but the finish has yet to follow in any real capacity. Should we be concerned yet? Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another Righteous Sack Beating and a fresh round of voicemails to get your take on everything that's been happening since last week's episode. Oilers can't protect a lead, goaltending rumours, and fighting on Twitter
A fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never can only mean it's Wednesday afternoon, you're on the back half of your work week, and we've got a whole lot of catching up to do. Are you excited? I'm excited.Kicking off this week's podcast, I got started with a run through of the Mark Spector/Tim Peel drama that kicked off on Twitter Monday night after the former NHL referee posted screenshots of their DMs on social media. Needless to say, the Internet latched onto the back-and-forth in a very real way, and it was interesting to see the reaction from folks who were not shy about chiming in. Turning back to the Oilers, the good vibes from the three-game win streak have all but disappeared as the Oilers have dropped their last two games. To make matters worse, the Oilers had two-goal leads in each of those losses, and it's getting to the point of wondering what needs to happen for this team to be able to protect a lead. I also touched on some of the latest rumours surrounding the club, including Dave Gagner's name being thrown out there as a possible GM as well as potential goaltending targets from across the league. Of course, all of this stuff is merely speculation at this point, but when things are going as poorly as they are in Edmonton right now, the noise and nonsense is sure to follow. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another Righteous Sack Beating and a fresh round of voicemails to get your take on everything that's been happening since last week's episode. #NationVacation recap, Woody out, and what comes next with Kris Knoblauch
A fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never can only mean it's Wednesday afternoon, you're on the back half of your work week, and we've got a whole lot of catching up to do. Are you excited? I'm excited.Kicking off this week's podcast, I got started with a farewell to my beloved Alfa Romeo Stelvio after our deal with Alfa Romeo of Edmonton wrapped up last week. As much as I always expected them to call me and say my car had been sold, I was hoping I'd be able to drive Valtteri forever. From there, I recapped the #NationVacation to Seattle and tried to give a few different stories from my perspective that you may not have heard yet. What remained constant, however, was that the people who join us on these trips are truly incredible, and they make every trip we do so very special. Getting back to the Oilers, it's been a crazy week around these parts, and I tried to make sense as best as possible about the decision to fire Jay Woodcroft and replace him with Kris Knoblauch. One thing I know for sure: just because I'm annoyed about Woodcroft being let go doesn't mean I won't be cheering for Coach Garlic to succeed. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about Jack Campbell. At least, not right now. As we know, Soup was sent down to the Bakersfield Condors last week, and to say that his stint on the farm has been unsuccessful so far would be the understatement of a lifetime. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another Righteous Sack Beating and a fresh round of voicemails to get your take on everything that's been happening since last week's episode. Jack Campbell clears waivers, Calvin Pickard recalled, and nothing makes sense
A fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never can only mean Wednesday afternoon and that you're on the back half of your work week. Are you excited? I'm excited.Kicking off this week's BLTN, I started with a recap of what has been a somewhat boring week in terms of personal news, and how it was nice to be home every night after what was a very busy Heritage Classic week. Having nothing to do gave me a chance to catch up on some sleep and get caught up on all of my favourite shows, including the first episode of a ridiculous new dating show on Netflix. Getting back to the Oilers, the week's big news was obviously the organization's decision to waive Jack Campbell and assign him to the Bakersfield Condors in the hopes that he can find his game. Given that Soup hasn't been able to stop anything since arriving in Edmonton, it wasn't surprising to see him waived, but rather that the organization actually decided to take that option. In his place, Calvin Pickard will look to provide some stability between the pipes, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't concerned that he'll be able to make that happen through no fault of his own. I also looked at the Connor Brown injury that kept him off the ice the last two games and whether there's any merit to the idea that he should be the next one waived to recoup some cap savings for next season. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another Righteous Sack Beating and a fresh round of voicemails to get your take on everything that's been happening since last week's episode. The Heritage Classic, Sam Gagner's third tour, and all kinds of live music
A fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never can only mean Wednesday afternoon and that you're on the back half of your work week. Are you excited? I'm excited.Kicking off this week's BLTN, I started with a recap of a very busy week for myself and the Nation. From the TOOL concert on Wednesday night to the Oilers' disaster in Minnesota on Friday to having the pendulum swing back the other way with a BOA win in the Heritage Classic, the emotional rollercoaster that is being an Edmonton fan never ends around here. Needless to say, having the boys kick off their season as poorly as they did was a major cause for concern, but it was equally fascinating to see how quickly the vibes changed with a win over the Calgary Flames. With the recap of my week out of the way, I dug into what's been a pretty busy week for the Oilers after the team waived Adam Erne and replaced him with a freshly signed Sam Gagner. For some fans, Gagner returning for a third of duty was precisely what they were looking for, while others hoped that Raphael Lavoie would finally get a crack at the NHL. How will it work out? Only time will tell. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another Righteous Sack Beating and a fresh round of voicemails to get your take on everything that's been happening since last week's episode. The Oilers are ruining my mood and I need them to stop... please.
Is there anything better than getting your weekly episode of Better Lait Than Never earlier than expected? Of course not, don't be ridiculous. On this week's podcast, there was plenty to talk about as the Oilers dropped their third straight game, lost Connor McDavid for the next few games, and I'm spending the rest of my Wednesday preparing for tonight's Tool concert. To kick off this week's podcast, I got started with a few housekeeping items from shipping out those contest hoodies to watching games at Nation HQ with the squad. That led me to a preview of Sunday's Heritage Classic and how that game isn't shaping up the way so many of us would have expected since both the Oilers and Flames are struggling so badly. On the bright side, I'm going to the Tool concert at Rogers Place tonight, which excites me to be able to show up to the rink and not be stressing about what the Oilers may or may not do on any given night. And with our beloved hockey team at the front of my mind, I dove into what's been happening over the last week and how things seem to be getting worse and not better. Starting with Connor McDavid's upper-body injury, the hits keep coming for an Oilers team that just cannot seem to find any traction. The mistakes they're making are numerous, and while we all know that can happen, the real problem is that most of these avoidable issues are winding up in the back of the net. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another Righteous Sack Beating and a fresh round of voicemails to get your take on everything that's been happening since last week's episode. More Oilers ass kickings and less getting our asses kicked... please
After dropping the first two games of the year in disappointing fashion, the Oilers rebounded in a massive way with a 6-1 win over the Nashville Predators. Not only was that win huge for the team, but it was also big for the general happiness of Oilers fans everywhere.Kicking off this week's BLTN, I started the podcast with a few housekeeping notes from behind the scenes at Baggedmilk Manor and at Nation HQ. I gave an update on what the hell is taking so long for your hoodies to arrive, the latest movies I've watched as part of the Spooky Szn Spectacular, and was also able to gush about this being new blink-182 album week. With my own nonsense out of the way, I dove into what was an eventful week for the Edmonton Oilers that saw the team lose two winnable games before bouncing back with a dominant performance over the Predators. Sticking with that win, it was a magical evening in Nashville as the Oilers got contributions throughout the lineup, which paid off in a big way. From Leon Draisaitl's continued dominance to Jack Campbell bouncing back in a big way to the second line chipping in with three goals, that was easily the most complete game the boys have played so far. Needless to say, last night's win was one that not only did the team need, but all of us also needed.
