When Employees Feel Entitled

When Employees Feel Entitled
Kuba and Bethany tackle some uncomfortable examples of an employee who felt entitled and was quite verbal with her disappointment over gifts she felt were hers. The examples will definitely make the skin crawl, but these are relatively common examples. It is important to set the stage very clearly with team members regarding bonus plans, which are elective extras for the team. Openly complaining about the rules related to getting a bonus is a clear indication that the team might not be ready for a bonus program. It is also important to clearly set the stage for which gifts delivered to the practice are for the doctor and which are for the team. Dr. Kuba’s example gives listeners an uncomfortable example of what can go wrong when a team member does not clearly know the rules related to gifts. Previous Episodes Worth Revisiting: How to Solicit Genuine Feedback from EmployeesClear Expectations and Sticky Conversations  🎉 You're invited to Bethany's Brunch, a client appreciation appreciation event that we have also extended to our Managing Dental Drama community! The Aftermath of Firing an Employee – Part 2

The Aftermath of Firing an Employee – Part 2
The conversation continues today! This topic is simply too large to cover in one episode. Today, Dr. Kuba and Bethany talk about what can occur on the team after an employee is fired. First, the terminated employee could very well experience strong emotions after the well-executed termination. He or she could lash out in a variety of ways not limited to bashing you online or in social media, talking negatively about you to professional referral sources, or even luring your employees away to other jobs. How should one manage this explosion of emotions? You might be surprised to hear Bethany mention that most of these reactions are non-consequential and therefore should not elicit a frantic response. Second, Dr. Kuba discusses the critical importance of having a plan and talking openly about the plan. Many team members may wonder who is going to take over the tasks of the terminated employee. BEFORE the termination, it is critical to thoroughly think through a plan for covering the roles and responsibilities of the former employee. Previous Episodes Worth Revisiting: Work Culture ProblemsMama Said They’ll Be Days Like This🎉 You're invited to Bethany's Brunch, a client appreciation appreciation event that we have also extended to our Managing Dental Drama community! The Aftermath of Firing an Employee
After receiving a clear plan of action for terminating a relationship with an employee, the crucial question becomes – How do you handle the aftermath of firing an employee? What do you say to the team? When do you say those things to the team? Often, the aftermath is the scariest part of termination decisions, and at times, the anxiety over the aftermath can even prevent a practice owner from making the decision to fire the employee. In this episode, Dr. Kuba and Bethany unpack the critical timing of informing employees and the formula for which to draft the right message. Respectful and quick communication is essential in cleaning up and rebuilding after losing an employee.  Previous Episodes Worth Revisiting: How Many Team Members Do I Need? Insurance Short Pays, and We are the Bad Guys?

Insurance Short Pays, and We are the Bad Guys?
In a world where insurance continues to find new ways to pay less, it is incredibly frustrating when the dentist and team are somehow the ones to blame. In this episode, Bethany and Dr. Kuba discuss what is becoming a chronically reoccurring problem – patients angry at the dentist when insurance fails to hold up their end of the deal. Bethany has witnessed four angry patients in the past two weeks all with very similar resounding complaints or protests, “I’ve never had to pay this before,” or “I refuse to pay this,” or “The doctor wasn’t in the room long enough for me to be charged this amount.” In all of these complaints, services were rendered and many of those services are the same price they were last year. So, what has changed? Insurance. Insurance pays less and leaves the patient (and the practice) with an unexpected balance. Instead of the patient becoming angry with insurance, they turn their anger to the dentist. Somehow, he or she is in the wrong. Listen closely to this episode to find some strategies to equip your team with the confidence, knowledge, and verbiage they need to tackle these patient complaints. Previous Episodes Worth Revisiting: Should I Drop Insurance Plans? The No-Manager Model - Meet Dr. Ludlow
Meet Dr. Ludlow! He and Bethany have worked together for almost 10 years. Dr. Ludlow has a unique practice in that is very large and still privately owned. Therefore, it might be surprising to most listeners that Dr. Ludlow does not have an Office Manager. In this episode, he discusses his strategic decision to grow a large, successful practice without a manager in place. Although practices can be successful with and without a manager, Dr. Ludlow manages his own practice and is passionate about doing away with the bureaucracy and directly leading his practice well. Because of this “No-Manager Model,” Dr. Ludlow is on the frontlines of disgruntled patients and team members and therefore has learned to pivot and adapt in order to meet the needs of his growing team and practice. Charting Your Course to Contentment
So often, there is a spoken and unspoken pressure to push your practice as far as it will go. Grow. Grow. Grow. Push. Push. Push. So many well-meaning people apply pressure to dentists to grow their practice into something massive. There tends to be a simple definition of success that every practice owner is fed, and then they spin their wheels always working to achieve. In this episode, Bethany and Dr. Kuba talk about an experience Dr. Kuba had recently where a well-meaning advisor pressured her to push her practice toward a destination. Through dialogue, Dr. Kuba was reminded that she is content in her practice. It is providing for her family. It is providing good careers for her team. It is focused on quality care, and it allows her to support her family and aging parents. She discusses the importance of finding contentment in the practice, knowing that it will ebb and flow with life goals. Previous Episodes Worth Revisiting: Discovering Your Why and Then Practicing Happy The “Surface Pressure” is Killing Me, Now What?🎉🎊REGISTRATION OPEN:🎈🎉 Bethany and Dr. Kuba are excited to officially open up registration for the two-day CONSULTING CRASH COURSE! Task Management – The Art of Getting Things Done
Most days for dental professionals feel overwhelming. How is it possible to get everything done? With constant interruptions and consistent “fires” to put out, the daily tasks of running a dental office often get pushed to the side. Then, they pile up. By the end of the week, the mound of things to complete feels insurmountable. Dentists and their team members leave the week feeling overwhelmed with what still needs to be finished. They then start the next week with the same overwhelmed feeling as they begin another week with constant interruptions. Bethany challenges listeners to take control of their tasks and gives practical steps for organizing the day and week into maximum productivity. What is a good treatment coordinator?
03-06-2024
What is a good treatment coordinator?
No matter the specialty, treatment acceptance is the lifeblood of every practice. In a good number of practices, an excellent treatment coordinator is behind exemplary treatment acceptance. So, what is a good treatment coordinator (TC)? What makes them unique and better than other TCs? In this episode, Dr. Kuba and Bethany discuss the core qualities that make great TCs. As a foundational quality, treatment coordinators have an insatiable desire to close cases, which leads them to obsess over every detail of the encounter. They seek to know and understand their patients while communicating with them in a way that is effective and achieves the desired result. An excellent treatment coordinator is always tracking potential trends and tweaking fine details to ensure that the acceptance rate improves. If a practice is missing a treatment coordinator, then the doctor usually assumes the role. Because treatment acceptance is such a valuable part of every practice, this episode cannot be missed!Previous Episodes Worth Revisiting: Bethany’s Top Ten Treatment Acceptance TipsShould I Offer Financing or In-House Financing? 🎉🎊REGISTRATION OPEN:🎈🎉 Bethany and Dr. Kuba are excited to officially open up registration for the two-day CONSULTING CRASH COURSE! Bad Blood – When Team Members Can’t Seem to Get Along
It is, unfortunately, a frequent occurrence. Team members argue, disagree, and simply cannot seem to get along. At times, it is related to simple personality differences. Other times, it runs deeper and seems to impact daily interactions. In most situations, the arguments lead to a chronic feeling of bad blood on the team. The doctor is often unaware of the specifics, but can sense that something is off. There are times when the doctor is roped into the disagreement and must somehow mediate the situation. All the drama can impact employee retention, patient satisfaction, and even the practice success. So, it is important to handle situations quickly and with strategy. If your team is constantly struggling with arguments, cliques, and team drama, you could benefit from taking a deep dive into personalities, communication, conflict management, and other topics at the Consulting Crash Course. CE Solution – Best Education Course!

CE Solution – Best Education Course!
In this episode, Dr. Kuba and Bethany talk about the various disappointments in continuing education courses and dental conferences. It is difficult to find a course or conference that meets everyone’s needs, and it is even harder to justify the cost involved in these classes. Often, practice owners will limit down the number of team members they invite simply because the results of the course often do not justify the cost. Implementation is another difficulty with CE courses. Even if the team gets super fired up at the course, the implementation is dismal on the backend. This causes practice owners to wonder if they should have even invested in the event. Finally, Dr. Kuba quizzes Bethany on her out-of-the-box idea on what she believes is going to be the best education course – a 2-day consulting crash course designed for ONLY one office at a time.
