Our Editor's Take

TV Guidance Counselor Podcast invites actors comedians writers and musicians to talk about classic TV. Host Ken Reid is a comedian who created this show to discuss his affinity for pop culture before 2000.

Some of his guests choose a TV Guide issue to reminisce about. They recall the TV episodes that aired that week and describe what they grew up watching. Others talk about shows they starred in or wrote. Reid gets an astonishing amount of insight from each podcast guest without contrived questions. He's a natural conversationalist whose fascinating guests are willing participants.

Actor and comedian Kumail Nanjiani visits TV Guidance Counselor Podcast. He assesses his early viewing habits. Nanjiani selects the November 12 1994 issue of TV Guide. The issue lists a House of Style episode where Cindy Crawford and Sheryl Crow go shoe shopping. Nanjiani and Reid express distinct memories of that show. The issue also mentions a dramatic Baywatch episode. They joke about how instead of cops lifeguards solved crimes on Baywatch.

On the podcast Nanjiani shares that there was only one TV channel in Pakistan when he was young. Alf and Picket Fences were on that channel. Nanjiani assumed those were the most famous American shows. He laughs about making TV references once he moved to the US that Americans didn't get. They were watching bigger hits like Seinfeld.

Reid expresses gratitude when Bonnie Hunt joins TV Guidance Counselor Podcast. He says Hunt might be the person he finds most interesting. She acts produces directs and writes with integrity. Hunt was the first woman to write and star in her own show with The Building. It featured George Clooney George Wendt and David Letterman.

The Building got canceled after one season but not because it failed. Hunt declined a studio request that contradicted how she treats friends. She later received flowers apologies and a song about second chances from the studio.

TV Guidance Counselor Podcast features the perspectives of producers writers and actors. Fans of TV shows from the 1990s may enjoy this show.
