Our Editor's Take

The Hammer Lane Legends podcast invites professional drivers to discuss unexpected moments on the job. Tony Merkel and his dad, Brian Merkel, are truck drivers. They were the original podcast hosts. A frequent collaborator, Brian Shipper, became a cohost in 2022 when Tony moved. The guys talk to truck drivers, firefighters, police officers, and bus drivers. Each guest reveals memorable miles behind the wheel. There are bull-hauling tales, planes exploding on highways, and paranormal encounters.

Driving isn't an easy job. Some drivers work all night. Others endure traffic every day. The podcast hosts don't have the resentfulness one might expect. They're funny, friendly proponents of driver safety.

Episode 42 of the Hammer Lane Legends podcast features an interesting driver. He transports entertainers on tour buses. Listeners learn the benefits and detriments of that duty. The driver took Hall & Oates on tour. A Russian ballet also traveled with the driver, celebrating Christmas and Thanksgiving together. He also cleans toilets and changes sheets for hard-partying bands.

The coach driver of that episode has seen unusual things. He observed shuttlecock-shaped flying objects in New Mexico. They drifted away as he approached. Were they UFOs or military experiments? He tells a funny story about a festival tour with 30 buses. As they drove away from a forest, a Bigfoot-like creature ran by. No one said anything. The next day at breakfast, the drivers looked around the room, wondering who would mention it. They were afraid they'd seem crazy and lose their licenses. One driver finally spoke up. They discovered that every fourth bus had a Bigfoot sighting. Listeners learn what it was.

The Hammer Lane Legends podcast welcomes stories and questions from listeners. Drivers communicate on the road, and now others can learn what they talk about. They debate the pros and cons of day driving versus night driving. Brian drives at night, while Tony is a daytime driver. They share tips and lessons they've learned, like what to do when a deer runs in front of the truck. These drivers expect the unexpected, and it happens. They have the stories to prove it.
