In The Dark

The New Yorker

In the Dark, hosted by Madeleine Baran, is an award-winning investigative-journalism podcast that started in 2016. Its first season looked at the mysterious abduction of Jacob Wetterling in rural Minnesota and the lack of accountability that sheriffs face when they fail to solve cases. Season 2 examined the case of Curtis Flowers, who was tried six times for the same crime. In 2020, In the Dark released a special report on the coronavirus pandemic in the Mississippi Delta. In 2023, In the Dark joined The New Yorker and Condé Nast. “The Runaway Princesses,” a four-part series that asks why the women in Dubai’s royal family keep trying to run away, came out in January.

In the Dark is a two-time Peabody Award winner and, in 2019, became the first podcast to win a George Polk Award, one of the top honors in journalism. The program has also received an Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award and a Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award.

Our Editor's Take

In The Dark is a true crime podcast. Each season features a different crime subject. Season three, The Runaway Princesses, is a joint effort between APM Reports and The New Yorker. Host Madeleine Baran shares the disturbing story of the House of Maktoum. Writer and journalist Heidi Blake joins Baran for the season's four episodes. They explore why female royalty tried to escape the United Arab Emirates (UAE). It is a story of violence, resilience, despair, hope, imprisonment, and the fight for freedom.

Season one of In The Dark examines the decades-long case of Jacob Wetterling's murder. Wetterling's body went undiscovered for 27 years after he went missing. How did this case remain unsolved for so long? The season reveals the investigating officer's monumental errors. Wetterling will never return to his family. But, his kidnapping and murder led to the creation of sex offender registries.

The podcast's second season examines Curtis Flower's controversial murder conviction. After the Supreme Court overturned his first conviction, he underwent several more trials. These trials took place over more than 20 years, throughout which Flowers was on death row. Many believe Flowers, as a Black man, was the victim of racial bias. Baran analyzes the case and interviews those involved in the trials.

Besides these seasons, the show features a limited series. Coronavirus in the Delta explores the effects of COVID-19 in the southeast United States. Baran speaks with residents from a variety of backgrounds. These installments feature prison inmates, college football players, and a blues musician.

In The Dark has won prizes for its excellent production and reporting. Listeners will hear from the people closest to these true stories. The show exposes the criminal justice system's flaws—in the United States and abroad. With The Runaway Princesses, Baran and Blake also reveal the systemic issues in the UAE and England. Episodes are between 30 and 45 minutes.
