Love Life’s Comedy Podcast Ep 8 - My Comedy Mentor With Josh O’Brien
Welcome to Love Life’s Comedy, a podcast about my journey learning, studying, practicing, and performing the art and science of comedy — from standup to improv, sketch and everything in between. My name is CJ Emanuel. I’m a retired Navy Veteran using comedy and podcasting as ways to supplement and self-medicate treating my mental health. Along the way, I want to include conversations about life and comedy with fellow comics and comedians — from amateurs and Open Mic-ers (like me) to touring professionals — as well as funny and interesting people from all walks of life. This show’s mantra is simple: Love Life. Life’s Comedy.
I chopped it up with my standup comedy and podcasting mentor, Josh O’Brien. I met OB as both of us were ending our respective military careers and preparing for life as (gasp!) civilians . He had a plan: to continue pursuing his dream as a standup comic and do it for a living. I picked Josh’s brain for advice on building and growing your set, networking and conducting yourself as a professional, and getting as much stage time as possible.
Josh also talks about his early days in standup while serving on Active Duty, joke thieves vs parallel thinking, behind the scenes tales at the World-Famous Comedy Store in LA and The Funny Bone in Virginia Beach, Stanley Cup playoffs, and more!
