Ep 295 How to Use Humor to Drink Less
Get ready to laugh! This episode I discuss why humor is often a good strategy to help ease the pressure around changing your relationship with alcohol.  Laughing releases natural feel good endorphins, takes the pressure off real time urges and battles about drinking or not, and it's fun!  I encourage you to seek out funny things throughout your day.  The easiest thing to laugh at is your own mind and the wild ideas and suggestions it will tell you when you don't really want to be drinking.  Nature is also really funny. Going outside and observing some wildlife is sure to get a giggle or two.  And videos are really funny too, if you want a funny one that I can't stop laughing about, email mehello@angelamascenik.com  and I'll send it to you!! Ep 294 Pen to Paper: How Journaling Can Help You Stop Over-Drinking

Ep 294 Pen to Paper: How Journaling Can Help You Stop Over-Drinking
I am delighted to dedicate a full podcast episode on JOURNALING! I get asked all the time, 'Why do I need to journal?' 'Do I have to journal?' 'I hate journaling' 'I don't know how to journal.' And this episode goes into 3 areas: Why do I need to journal? How to Journal? What to do with the journaling after. The big takeaway is this: Journaling helps you see how your mind is responding to things. It helps you learn about yourself more and it helps you connect with yourself on a deeper level and when you do that you are more capable of changing your behavior (like the over-drinking). I hope you enjoy this episode! Ohhh, and guess what's coming back in September? This podcast episode takes you through a few exercises in naming and overcoming your fears that might be stopping you from reaching your goals. Fear can help us or hold us back. When looking at making personal changes such as alcohol, fear is something that typically holds us back. It's important to really see your fears and then decide what you want to do from there. Do you want to take action or do you want to stay where you are? We need to go through the exercise of facing our fears before we can make a clear decision. Ep 292 The Beauty in the Process: Why Success is More Than the End Result
15-08-2024
Ep 292 The Beauty in the Process: Why Success is More Than the End Result
This episodes dives into the how to see the payoff and the beauty in the process to your goals instead of focusing on just end goal. I recently led a small group of women on a challenging 8-mile hike during my Seattle Retreat and it was foggy at the peak. But, I quickly realized that the hike wasn't about the great views at the end, it was more about putting yourself in an opportunity to expand your discomfort and to grow and that the payoff will serve you LATER, maybe not right in that moment, but you will call on your skills that you learned during that hike for years to come. And that is the same way to approach any goal or change you want to make. It's about celebrating yourself along the way and finding the ways in which you did make changes and got out of your comfort zone. This makes the journey of it more fun and motivates you to keep going. Tune in and hear more about this hike and why expanding your discomfort and celebrating yourself along the way is what you need to be focusing on! Ep 290 Why do I Need to Know How my Feelings Feel?
31-07-2024
Ep 290 Why do I Need to Know How my Feelings Feel?
My amazing client asked me this question and I thought it was so great that I did a podcast on it. Your feelings drive your behavior, so if you are wanting to make behavior changes, learning how to feel your feelings and understanding your feelings on a deeper level is crucial. This episode dives into the WHY we want to know how your feelings actually feel in your body. I'm talking about the physical sensations you get when you are having a feeling. The tightness you feel when you are anxious. The fiery hotness you feel when you are angry. The empty hollow feeling you feel when you are sad. The lightness you feel when you are happy. These are the sensations of your feelings. And if you can develop a skill of noticing and describing these sensations while they are happening, a couple things will happen. You can pause long enough to interrupt automatic behavior and prevent doing something you actually don't want to do like drink alcohol. You will get to know yourself and your like/dislikes and give yourself natural pleasures and be able to process feelings instead of numb or escape or over-work/do Tune in and hear all of this explained! Ep 289 Grief, Sunrises and Changing Plans
This podcast episode is an update on the Sober Sunrise Project, grief surrounding the unexpected and sudden loss of my sister in-law, Teresa, and being flexible on changing plans. I share the importance of taking care of yourself no matter what unexpected or difficult thing happens in your life. I also share why learning to process your feelings is so important so that you can call on your tools during difficult times when you need the tools the most. And my thoughts on how drinking during difficult times makes things so much worse and I have found a deeper gratitude for my sobriety in this time and it has helped me find gratitude everyday even when things feel so sad. Take care of yourself friends, your life matters and your goals matter and I'm here to help you figure this out! Ep 288 Podcast Rewind: Up-leveling Your Discomfort + a Good Story

Ep 288 Podcast Rewind: Up-leveling Your Discomfort + a Good Story
If you've successfully cut back on how much you are drinking, even if it's just one extra day less or instead of 3 drinks you've been having 2 more often, you had to go through some discomfort to do that right? You had to process urges, manage your mind, say no more often, and all that isn't a walk in the park, it's UNCOMFORTABLE. When you move towards any goal you will have different levels of discomfort. The first level of discomfort is often the hardest but once you accomplish it and make some headway it becomes less uncomfortable and you can even settle into the new normal. It feels more natural, like you don't have to try as hard. Well, this episode I talk about up-leveling that discomfort and choosing to feel uncomfortable AGAIN to make more progress towards your goal. You also want to listen as I tell you a story about my recent 'tiny' house rental.. let's call it the ultimate test of my level of discomfort, ha ha! Ep 287 Drinking Social Pressure and Unsupportive Comments
10-07-2024
Ep 287 Drinking Social Pressure and Unsupportive Comments
This episode dives in the problem of people in our lives who might say unsupportive comments about you cutting back or quitting alcohol.  I explain WHY they might do this and how to navigate it if the person who is the offender is important to you.  I also discuss our culture and the social pressure we experience when we are actively trying to change things.  These things can be scary and make us not want to share and tell the truth about our drinking.  But remember, this discomfort is temporary and you can get to a place where you aren't bothered by our heavy drinking society and other peoples thoughts and comments.  Down the road, you will have established stronger boundaries, you will say no to doing things or being around people who don't feel supportive, you will move past this and have the true freedom you seek. Ep 286 Maybe It Shouldn't Be Easy

Ep 286 Maybe It Shouldn't Be Easy
Happy July, I am super excited about my 30-days of sober sunrise project I am doing this month at Carolina Beach, NC. You can read about it here,  https://www.angelamascenik.com/blog I'll be updating it everyday.  I'm celebrating 6 years of alcohol free lifestyle this summer and I wanted to do something big. This episode explains the project and the work involved in setting myself up to do it.    It's not 'easy.' Just like stopping over-drinking isn't easy or changing any behavior we have been doing for years.    And, I'd argue it shouldn't be easy. It should take effort, because that is what makes life interesting. The work you put into it is difficult, there are failures and obstacles along the way, but when you do the thing you have been wanting to, it makes all that work worth it.    And maybe it shouldn't be easy for our kids either.    We all want better lives for our kids and we want to infuse our wisdom of life experiences into them, so they don't make mistakes or struggle.    But when we push too hard and get so upset when they don't do what we think they should, it causes us unnecessary discomfort and suffering, which is no fun.    Life if full of challenges, and mistakes, and obstacles and that is how we learn.    Listen to my previous podcast episodes on this topic here: Stop Over-drinking and Start Living, Episode 63, REBEL against Easyhttps://www.angelamascenik.com/podcasts/stop-over-drinking-and-start-living/episodes/2147641514   Stop Over-drinking and Start Living, Episode 244, Easier not Betterhttps://www.angelamascenik.com/podcasts/stop-over-drinking-and-start-living/episodes/2148136574  Check out Alive AF! here:https://www.angelamascenik.com/aliveaf   Grab the last few Cancun Retreat Spots here:http://www.angelamascenik.com/2024retreatsandcoaching    Apply to work with me privately here:https://form.typeform.com/to/x8tcz6lm   Tags:Stop Over-drinking, Angela Mascenik, stop drinking podcast, how to feel, how to overcome addiction, how to drink less wine, change your relationship with alcohol, coach for women who want to drink less alcohol, help to stop over-drinking, stop over-drinking, life coach to help stop over-drinking, self-love, importance of self-love, online membership to stop over-drinking, program to help quit alcohol, how to quit drinking, spouses, partners, food, overeating, moderation, sober retreat, how to prioritize yourself, make yourself a priority to drink less, mental health, mental health and alcohol use, mental health awareness month, how to stop over-drinking, how to stop drinking so much wine, life coach for women who drink too much, discomfort, current discomfort, easy, shouldn't be easy, challenges, mistakes, sunrise
Ep 285 Looking Beyond Your Current Discomfort
27-06-2024
Ep 285 Looking Beyond Your Current Discomfort
This episode helps you look past your current discomfort with over-drinking.  Often when we are considering a change or claiming a specific goal to drink less, we get stuck in what we currently 'feel' is true for us. We review past failures and discomforts and then think about that as we asses a given situation, like attending a party or going on vacation sober.  This episode will help you see a different picture and make decisions from your future, not the current struggle you are in.  You first need to know what that future could look like for you and then when it comes time to make a decision, you make it from believing that future scenario is going to happen, not what is happening now.  You must tune in and hear how I explain this strategy that will ultimately help you move forward and drink less sooner than later!Good news Alive AF! is OFFICIALLY OPEN, now until June 30th, sign up here: https://www.angelamascenik.com/aliveafAnd you can grab the last 2 spots to the Seattle Retreat by going here: www.angelamascenik.com/2024retreatsandcoachingApply for private coaching here: https://form.typeform.com/to/x8tcz6lm Tags:Stop Over-drinking, Angela Mascenik, stop drinking podcast, how to feel, how to overcome addiction, how to drink less wine, change your relationship with alcohol, coach for women who want to drink less alcohol, help to stop over-drinking, stop over-drinking, life coach to help stop over-drinking, self-love, importance of self-love, online membership to stop over-drinking, program to help quit alcohol, how to quit drinking, spouses, partners, food, overeating, moderation, sober retreat, how to prioritize yourself, make yourself a priority to drink less, mental health, mental health and alcohol use, mental health awareness month, how to stop over-drinking, how to stop drinking so much wine, life coach for women who drink too much, discomfort, current discomfort

Ep 284 Experiencing Grief and Loss
Friends, I have news, my sweet Edie girl dog has passed.  This episode is an exploration of how I'm processing her passing and concepts that I use to make the grief and loss more bearable.  I also discuss that the pain from loss is not linear and we need to let go of timelines.  The most painful thing we can do is judge ourselves that 'we should be over' something when the grief pops through.  Thank you for listening week after week and getting to hear her snores, her collar shake and chime and even an occasional bark. She has been a part of this podcast for 6 straight years, there for me through all the changes, expansions, coaching calls with you and more.  She will be missed. Ep 283 Coaching Session with Client Rhiannon
My amazing client Rhiannon, generously offered to come on the podcast in exchange for a coaching session!  She posted in our Alive AF! private Facebook group about needing coaching around summertime and how to make her self a priority while her kids are home and they have a lot going on.  You MUST listen to this podcast immediately if summer time has you feeling like you can't possibly find time for yourself and your goals, you have any resentments towards family members, or you need a dose of inspiration.  This was the question that she posted in the group, tune in and hear the coaching I gave her:  '#coaching I have been wanting to post but have just been so overwhelmed and busy. School has been out for almost 3 weeks and that always throws me into a tailspin. That and the fact that I have been traveling solo with my kids 8 out of the last 14 days. All my choice of course but I find it hard to find time for myself when this happens. Same old song and dance about putting everyone else’s needs above my own.I was wanting to set a goal for myself for June that I would find time to just do the basics daily; journal, plan, read, listen to a workshop, drink my water and walk. With my kids out of school and being around me so much I have a hard time finding privacy and time to be alone to do these things and I have learned that I really need that. I have been getting up early and somedays it’s great but somedays they get up early too and I get annoyed by that bc I feel like that’s my only time to be alone. I realize I’m judging myself for that last fact. Edit to add that I do see an improvement from last year, I had already started back to very regular drinking by now from the same issue. So I am proud that part is sticking for me finally.'  I hope you enjoy this episode, and you take the coaching I gave Rhiannon and apply it to your own life! Ep 282 How to Protect Yourself From Over-drinking in the Future
Ep 282, How to Protect Yourself From Over-drinking in the FutureThis episode I discuss the importance of doing what you can to protect yourself from over-drinking in the future. You might be someone who has made great progress in stopping the over-drinking. Now, you might be lacking on 'doing the work' that you did in the beginning to get where you are now. This episode encourages you to invest in your self-care even when things are going well. Stress and taking on too many things takes a toll on our well-being and if you aren't investing into yourself you can feel on the edge and if this goes on too long it can lead you to over-drink. Over-drinking doesn't usually happen because of one event in one given day, it builds over time and this episode helps you understand how you can protect yourself from over-drinking in the future by taking care of yourself today. Tune in and hear a recent example of how I worked through this in my own life and choose to say no to something that was going to be too much of a stretch for me. Ep 280 Mental Health Awareness Month with Kim Jeffs

Ep 280 Mental Health Awareness Month with Kim Jeffs
This is a special conversation I had with Kim Jeffs, Founder, Executive & Somatic Coach of Soma and Soul and Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counseling Supervisor. From Kim: ‘I'm licensed as a mental health counseling supervisor in the State of NC. Additionally, I'm a certified Somatic Experiencing Practitioner, focused on high-stress physiology. Over two decades, I've explored the connection between the mind and body, obtaining various certifications that enrich my practice. This continuous learning has allowed me to help individuals tap into their potential, both professionally and personally. Despite my professional journey, it's essential to remember that, like everyone, I am human. I understand life's challenges and the importance of connection. I believe that we navigate life more effectively when we're connected and supportive of one another. This philosophy drives me, ensuring that Soma & Soul isn't just a business but a place of genuine support and transformation.’ Kim and I dive into mental health and bring awareness in how to identify if you are struggling with mental health. She also discusses Somatics, which is our bodies, and how our bodies can let us know if we need help processing our feelings/emotions. We also discuss the symptom of over-doing anything that isn’t good for us like over-drinking, over-working, over-eating etc. We highlight the need to get mental health support and that everyone struggles at some point or even regularly in their lives. There is no shame in getting help and just because you think you ‘should be happy’ because of your life circumstances, doesn’t mean that you don’t deserve to find out why you aren’t feeling or living the way you want or think you could. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did and it helps you recognize if you need additional support. Ep 279 Assumptions

Ep 279 Assumptions
My husband and I went to NYC for the weekend and a theme emerged, ASSUMPTIONS. So many assumptions happened for both of us and one involving a complete stranger. Our mind likes to make assumptions to save us energy and time. An assumption is a thing that is accepted as true or as certain to happen, without proof. Tune in and hear 3 completely different stories on assumptions, from brunch to a phone charger to a stranger yelling at us in Central Park. What assumptions are you making about other people that are HURTING YOU? Like, 'they are excluding me.' What assumptions are you making about alcohol that isn't serving you? Like 'if I don't drink, it will be boring.' Assumptions can help you or hurt you. If you find out you were wrong for assuming something, can you learn from this, let it go, or laugh instead of getting angry or blaming your assumption on someone else? I'd love to hear what assumptions you make that you have found out aren't true. Ep 278 Mental Health Awareness Month and Alcohol Use
08-05-2024
Ep 278 Mental Health Awareness Month and Alcohol Use
May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being.  It affects how we think, feel, and act.  It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make healthy choices.  Over-drinking is usually a sign that our mental health is in need of some help.  Over-drinking is a symptom. For a lot of my clients, it's a symptom of stress, high levels of anxiety, overwhelm, loneliness, grief, big painful life changes or traumatic events like a high conflict divorce or a major medical diagnoses.  Using alcohol as a way to cope is a sign that your mental health could use some support.  It's not something to be ashamed of or to keep a secret.  If you've been struggling with alcohol use and you identify as someone who is using alcohol as a way to cope (or another sign is, finding it very hard to stop automatic behavior and can't identify the cause of your over-drinking) it's time to get help.  Tune into this podcast episode and hear the intersections of mental health and over consumption of alcohol. Here's a resource I used in creating this episode:https://www.mentalhealth.org.uk/sites/default/files/2022-06/MHF-Alcohol-and-mental-health-guide.pdfAnother resource:SAMHSA’s National Helpline, 1-800-662-HELP (4357) (also known as the Treatment Referral Routing Service), or TTY: 1-800-487-4889 is a confidential, free, 24-hour-a-day, 365-day-a-year, information service, in English and Spanish, for individuals and family members facing mental and/or substance use disorders. This service provides referrals to local treatment facilities, support groups, and community-based organizations. In North Carolina:https://trosainc.org/finding-free-programs/MY LINKS: Retreat/coaching packages-https://www.angelamascenik.com/2024retreatsandcoachingJoin the Alive AF! waitlist-https://www.angelamascenik.com/aliveafApply to work with me privately-https://form.typeform.com/to/x8tcz6lm Tags: Stop Over-drinking, Angela Mascenik, stop drinking podcast, how to feel, how to overcome addiction, how to drink less wine, change your relationship with alcohol, coach for women who want to drink less alcohol, help to stop over-drinking, stop over-drinking, life coach to help stop over-drinking, self-love, importance of self-love, online membership to stop over-drinking, program to help quit alcohol, how to quit drinking, spouses, partners, food, overeating, moderation, sober retreat, how to prioritize yourself, make yourself a priority to drink less, mental health, mental health and alcohol use
Ep 277 My Goal for May: Allowing My Discomfort With Other People's Discomfort
03-05-2024
Ep 277 My Goal for May: Allowing My Discomfort With Other People's Discomfort
What does this even mean? Have you ever noticed how uncomfortable you get when you perceive other people feeling some sort of discomfort or negative feelings? If you have noticed this and then tried to 'make everyone feel better' or 'try to diffuse' a situation so the peace gets kept or whatever it is, how does this work out for you? Does it exhaust you, make you feel anxious, overwhelmed, or edgy? And then what do you do? Drink, eat, scroll, avoid, fight...or cause a bigger issue than what actually existed? Well, I happen to have been aware of myself being really uncomfortable and tight and edgy and grippy when I perceive some else's discomfort in a whole bunch of situations. And that sucks because when I feel that way, I immediately want to 'make it better' for them and that feels graspy and honestly it's a big energy suck AND it doesn't work. DANG IT. So that's my work this month. And I invite you to come along with me and choose something that is a big discomfort for you. Is it urges for alcohol, snacking at night or something else? What do you have a big discomfort over? The key to being more comfortable in this area is to ALLOW the initial discomfort you feel right now.You have to be willing to go through it for it to feel better. That's the process. This episode dives into how to do that and I share a little bit of what I am working on as an example. Let's get uncomfortable together, friends!Join Say YES for Drinking Less:https://www.angelamascenik.com/say-yesHire me as your private coach: https://form.typeform.com/to/x8tcz6lmGrab one of the last two spots in the Seattle retreat. Ep 276 Do I Have a Problem?

Ep 276 Do I Have a Problem?
This episode helps you discover if YOU have a problem with alcohol. Most people have an image in their minds about what someone with an alcohol problem looks like. And for most of my clients they don't match that description. Often people who want to cut back get pushback from their loved ones who don't understand why they are focusing on cutting back when 'they don't understand, you don't do anything bad, or nothing bad is happening from your drinking.' Sometimes these external messages confuse our desire to cut back or quit. You might then tell yourself, 'I work full-time, take care of the kids, take care of everything, surely I can have a couple glasses of wine at the end of the day!' And then you dismiss your own truth. This episode dives into this and helps you understand YOUR situation with alcohol better so you can remain clear on what you want and then can clearly communicate to others if you need to. If you are struggling and haven't been able to make the changes you want on your own, please get help.
